Welcome to the family!

I’m always, always excited to try healthy products, and I’m already IN LOVE with the Amazing Grass products I’ve already tried, so when I received a package in the mail with Amazing Meal samples, I was ecstatic! Then, I realized that my blender had died. Oh well. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, eh? So, what’d I do? I mixed each sample with either almond milk or rice milk and voila: Amazing Meal shake to go! YUM!

First, take a look at what I received….

Amazing Meal Samples + Shaker Cup!!

Crazy for Chocolate

You know me, I went for the chocolate first! So, I dumped the Chocolate Infusion sample into my lovely Amazing Grass shaker cup, along with some almond milk and shook, shook, shook.

It was DELICIOUS!!! I enjoyed every last sip and totally felt energized after drinking it. I had drank it mid-afternoon and I was really feeling tired, but this perked me right up! I give it an A+ and I’d definitely say it’s worth an investment. It’s tasty, good for you, and can be enjoyed as a healthy breakfast, snack, or other meal on the go. What else can we ask for, huh?! :-)

    Original = Awesome

So, by the time I tried the original Amazing Meal flavor, it was my third–and last–day of samples. I was in a rush that morning and was SO GLAD I had this sample. I tossed the powder into some rice milk and shook it all up. I cautiously took a taste, thinking original equaled plain and maybe awful tasting. Boy, was I wrong! I enjoyed the original flavor and headed out the door, smiling.

    Original Blend

Amazing Meal Original Blend, organic Rice Milk

    Amazing Meal Original Blend, bubbling

Original Blend gets an A as well. This was a delicious breakfast shake and was not only an energizing start to my day, it held me over nicely until lunch–that’s a huge plus in my book! :-) I might like this one even more than the Pomegranate Mango; I’m undecided! The Original Blend is a good investment, in my opinion, as well.

    24 July 2009

Love to entertain but aren’t quite sure how to go about it now that you’ve decided to go high-raw or 100% raw? Boy, do I have the book for you! Raw Food Celebrations (Co-written by Nomi Shannon and Sheryl Duruz) is chock-full of ideas, including different menus (more about this later), delectable desserts, and if you’re in to cocktails, there’s a menu for that, too!

There’s also a list of equipment and what uses you can get from them, and in the back there’s a glossary of ingredients so you can familiarize yourself with raw terms and a new way of (un)cooking!

    Pretty Cover!

    Raw Food Celebrations, Nomi Shannon

    Table of Contents

It’s nice to learn as much as possible about a book before you purchase it–or WIN it (as one lucky reader will in the upcoming contest)–so here’s a photo of the Table of Contents page and below is a description (in my own words) of what you’ll find in each chapter.

    Raw Food Celebrations

    Italian

Here, you’ll learn how to put a raw twist on traditional Italian dishes like pasta with marinara sauce. Instead of boiling pasta and using canned or cooked tomato sauce, you’ll create zucchini pasta with pesto and (raw) marinara sauce. Of course, that isn’t the only recipe in this chapter! Love Italian desserts? How about (raw) lemon gelato???

    Thai Menu

Want to go raw but don’t think you can give up your Pad Thai? You don’t have to! That’s right: Learn how to make RAW Pad Thai. How cool is that? Want another teaser? How about Thai coconut soup? Yum! And Thai dessert? Hmmmm…. mango-banana custard, maybe? Absolutely!

    Brunch Menu

Are you someone who enjoys getting together with your best friends for a refreshing brunch? Do you fear living a raw lifestyle will put a damper on that? Don’t worry; in this chapter you’ll get ideas for brunches, such as banana-papaya pudding and oatmeal with dates and almonds, and beautiful fruit kabobs. Sounds yummy, huh?!

    Cocktail Hour Menu

Do you live for cocktail hour? Think: raw cocktail! Yes, that’s right! Strawberry Daiquiris, Pina Coladas… Got the munchies? Nibble on zucchini roll-ups, canapes, or fruit with one of these sauces: goji-orange, chocolate-orange, or cashew cream. Mmmmm….

    Traditional Menu

Maybe you grew up in the South (like me!) and crave warm stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, meatloaf, and/or sweet potatoes. If this is you, you’ll be so happy to know that there are mock (raw) versions of each of these! Get ready to dig in and enjoy some old-fashioned, lip-smacking soul food!

    Light Luncheon Menu

Enjoy fresh, light lunches during the hot summer months? Maybe you like to eat a lighter lunch so you don’t feel heavy and weighed down as you try to make it through the rest of the day after your lunch break. This chapter gives some refreshing options: summer salad with Japanese Shoyu dressing or dilled spinach mousse with creamy dill sauce. Love light desserts as well? Envision luscious lemon cookies or orange-coconut biscotti! Delish!

    Sneak Peek

If you’re nosy like me, you’ll want to see photos of this yummy stuff I’m telling you about. Peek away!

    a handwritten note

I was truly honored (and blessed!) to receive a handwritten note (by Rick Diamond, of www.bookpubco.com). Thank you so much Rick, for sponsoring this contest–and to Nomi Shannon and Sheryl Duruz for creating such a RAWKIN’ resource for celebrating life!

    Contest

In the next post, you’ll have the opportunity for several entries to win both Raw Food Celebrations and The Raw Gourmet.

    24 July 2009

First, I’d like to extend a HUGE thank you to Nomi Shannon and her publisher (Books Alive) for not only sending me two of Nomi’s books to review and enjoy for many years to come, but for also generously sponsoring a contest here at Healing with (Raw) Juices, so one of you can also add both books to your raw food library and enjoy more creative raw foods!

    Raw Food Chef, Nomi Shannon

“I embraced a 100% raw food program, and over a matter of several weeks said good riddance to fibromyalgia, hypoglycemia, mood swings, allergic sinusitis, digestive disorders, including acid reflux, and in time rid myself of candida (a systemic yeast infection that has multiple symptoms). My physical, emotional and mental energy was so high I had never experienced anything like it. It would be a lie to say that, in my mid-forties, I felt as though I were in my twenties again. I had never felt as good in my twenties.”–Nomi Shannon

How inspiring is that?! Oh my goodness, what an honor for me to be given the amazing opportunity to review not one but TWO of Nomi Shannon’s books! Let’s focus on just one of those books today.

The Raw Gourmet is a delicious UN-cook book. From bright, beautiful photos of RAWsome dishes to health information about various ingredients, you’ll take away much more from this book than tons of new recipes to try.

Nomi Shannon, the author of this fantabulous book, is a Raw Foodist, Gourmet Chef, and a true source of encouragement for anyone who is suffering from health issues, who is looking to clean up their diet.Nomi has been 100% raw since 1987, when she was first introduced to raw foods as a complete lifestyle.

Even if you aren’t looking to convert to a 100% raw food lifestyle, you can benefit from this raw recipe book. You can use the raw recipes Nomi shares as snacks or side dishes alongside your cooked foods if you’re simply wanting to incorporate more raw/healthy foods into your diet. Or you can start creating these raw recipes if you’re wanting to transition to a high-raw or 100% raw food lifestyle. And you don’t have to be a Raw Foodist to enjoy tasty raw desserts. Either way, you can’t go wrong and you’ll enjoy these yummy rawlicious dishes! ;-)

    Gorgeous Cover Design!

    23 July 2009

No yoga for me today. I listened to my body and I knew I should take a rest day, so I did. I can’t wait for my date with Polly in the morning, though! :-) I wasn’t hungry when I first woke up. I didn’t feel like my usual warm lemon water, so I skipped that. I had a tall glass of plain water instead. After that, I had some herbal tea. When I finally got hungry, I didn’t know what I wanted! And guess what? I went crazy and had an organic Greek yogurt with frozen blueberries on top. Yeah, it isn’t raw but this is what I’m talking about when I say I sometimes craves a non-raw food, yet what I’m craving isn’t really junk food just because it isn’t raw. I’m still really close to 100% raw, really, but once in a while (once a day, once a week, once a month–whenever the urge hits), I have decided to treat myself to a non-raw (yet still healthy) food.

    Oikos (Organic) Greek Yogurt

Oikos Green yogurt, Stoneyfield Farm, blueberries

After my yummy-to-the-tummy Oikos Greek yogurt, I had my daily shot of E3 Live.

    Snack/Lunch

Since I had a late breakfast (around 11 a.m., or so) I didn’t eat lunch at noon. Instead, I ended up having a snack around maybe 1 p.m.? I was a little hungry but not much, so I had a big banana with a spoon of raw honey. Yum! (No pic, sorry!)

    Mid-Afternoon Snack

By this afternoon, I still wasn’t really craving anything–except chocolate! I realized I’d been craving chocolate all day, so I had me some! LOL Double the chocolate, double the fun, eh? I started with the totally delicious Amazing Grass Chocolate SuperFood bar. Yum-O! It has a thin layer of chocolate coating on the outside and nutty, green, chewy goodness on the inside. It’s healthy, tasty, and chocolate. What’s not to like? Seriously, I could eat one of these every single day! And they’re very dense and filling–AMAZING! :-)

    Amazing Grass Chocolate Bar

I decided to double up on my chocolate fix and had my other sample packet of Amazing Grass chocolate superfood powder, mixed with almond milk. Yum!

    Dinner

It was most definitely time for some raw veggies, so I fixed myself a salad. And here’s the sad news: all of my camera batteries are dead and I’m having to charge them–so no salad pics tonight! Sorry! :-( Use your imagination, though, and picture this:

a base of baby spinach leaves

    with chopped Napa cabbage

chopped heirloom organic banana peppers (from my garden)

diced heirloom organic bell peppers (from my garden)

sliced heirloom organic beets (from my garden)

    Manitoba Harvest hemp seeds

    scattered fresh blueberries

    Yummy to the tummy! :-)

    Contest!!

Want to win a giant 2 pound container of healthy deliciousness? Special K wants to know what nourishes me. So, here it is: raw juices, smoothies, raw foods, and healthy thoughts nourish me. What nourishes you? Head on over there and tell her so you can be entered to win! :-)

Coming next: various foods I’ve eaten when breaking other juice fasts I’ve been on, and also why I don’t incorporate vegetable broth into my juice fasting regimen like some juice fasters do. <—– I am working on this post!! :-)

    21 July 2009

I’m still sticking with Polly’s yoga videos. I love her positive attitude and her style!

I went with Yoga for yummy abs again this morning. I’m going to see how switching things up goes for me. So far, I’ve tried the following of Polly’s videos: Yoga for low back, Yoga for yummy abs, and Yoga for newbies. I love ‘em all! :-)

Let me tell you, although Polly’s yoga videos seem gentle and easy, I’m feeling the soreness, people! Sheesh, who knew?! LOL

I think I’ll take at least one day off each week to let my muscles rest. Maybe two? How many days each week do you practice yoga? Do you take a day or two off?

    Breakfast

Anyway, after yoga with Polly, I decided to have a bowl full of frozen blueberries. I absolutely love frozen blueberries! They’re so tasty!

    Frozen Blueberries

    frozen blueberries, breakfast raw

    frozen blueberries, breakfast

I drank some herbal tea after that (I didn’t make my warm lemon water this morning). I also had my daily shot of E3 Live.

    Lunch

By lunch time, I was starving! My eyes were bigger than my appetite, though, when I made this ginormous salad. LOL

    Giant Veggie Salad

    salad, raw food

    Napa cabbage

    Spinach leaves

    Heirloom lettuce

    Sliced celery

    Sliced carrots

    Sliced beets

    Sliced tomato

    Diced bell pepper

    salad, raw food, lunch

That was a huge salad and I was only able to eat about half of it. That’s okay, I’ll finish it off as a mid-afternoon snack, or as my dinner. It won’t go to waste! :-)

    Snack

I still have some more Amazing Grass products to sample (but couldn’t because I was juice fasting when they arrived) so I thought I’d try out the Chocolate Green SuperFood Drink Powder for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Oh. My. Goodness! It’s DELICIOUS!!!!

    Non-Raw Milk?

No, the organic rice milk is NOT raw. I’m not a milk person, really. I have never been one to just guzzle milk–even before my raw food adventures. When I ate the S.A.D. diet, I only used milk on my cereal. I tend to shy away from processed cereals nowadays, so I pretty much don’t use milk at all–not even in my smoothies (I use herbal tea instead).

Anyway, although it will be pretty rare,  I may decide to enjoy a treat once in a while that isn’t 100% raw. I’ll let you know when I do, like today with this organic rice milk.

I would have made a smoothie with the chocolate powder, a frozen banana, and some herbal tea but my blender died on me. :-( So, I remembered Jenna saying she just added the Amazing Grass chocolate powder to her shaker cup with rice milk so I just went for it–I’m so glad I did! I’m telling you, it’s soooooooooooooooooo good!!! Yum!

    Dinner

For dinner, I had the other half of my salad from lunch. And now I’m ready to call it a night. Can’t wait for yoga in the morning!! :-)

    20 July 2009

Wow, today was day 4 of my yoga journey. It’s crazy that I love it this much! I can’t get enough! But I’m taking my time so I don’t strain or hurt myself. I have to be careful with my back.

Speaking of back, I did a new video today: Yoga for low back by Polly at Yoga is Yummy. It was totally awesome. My back really did feel better afterward!

    YogaDownload.com

Both Cindy and Jocelyn have mentioned yogadownload.com, so I checked it out and downloaded a beginner’s class: Gentle Hatha Yoga #1. I haven’t tried that class yet, but I will! :-)

After my morning yoga, I remembered to make my favorite morning drink.

    Warm Lemon Water

    lemon water 1

    warm lemon water 2

After I drank that, I got busy with laundry, dishes, etc., and forgot to eat!

    Snack

Around noon, I wasn’t really hungry so I thought I’d just have a banana and sample some of the raw products Premier Organics sent me to review. (More about this fantabulous company and their organic, raw products in an upcoming post–and contest!!!)

    raw pecan nut butter

    raw macadamia nut butter

    raw cacao bliss

    Yum!

Macadamia nuts are my favorite nut ever, so of course I had a conniption over the macadamia nut butter. Pecans are my next favorite nut, so I chose it to sample on my banana as well. And, how can you go wrong with cacao bliss (aka raw chocolate)??!! Oh my gosh, y’all, these nut butters and the cacao bliss RAWKS! Soooooooooooooo tasty–and good for you!!! :-)

    Mid-Afternoon Snack

A little while later, I still wasn’t really hungry so I thought I’d drink my other juice from yesterday in my E3 Live shaker cup, with a scoop of Amazing Grass (I prefer my E3 Live liquid straight up :-) ).

    raw juice, day 4 yoga

    Dinner

I was craving a yummy salad for dinner, so I threw this together…

a salad with napa cabbage, heirloom lettuce, blueberries, tomatoes, carrots, celery, bell peppers

a salad with napa cabbage, heirloom lettuce, carrots, celery, bell pepper, blueberries, tomatoes

A little of each of the following:

    Napa cabbage

    heirloom lettuce

    sliced celery

    sliced carrots

    diced bell pepper

    baby tomatoes

    fresh blueberries

    Check It Out!

And I leave you with this: When I went to read Choosing Raw today, I discovered Gena had written a guest post for Fitness NYC. I knew it’d be great, but I didn’t realize it’d really be so relevant to this last few days of my own journey with yoga. I knew the post was about yoga. She mentioned it in her short post. I didn’t know it would be so touching, so beautiful, so true! You have to read this post. It’s fantabulous!

    19 July 2009

I can’t believe this is day 3 of my yoga adventures and I’m still excited about it–I LOVE it! :-)

This morning, I did the video called Yoga for Yummy Abs by Polly from Yoga is Yummy.

I did the cobra pose, too! Fantabulous, people!

I was hesitant to try a different video. I’m trying to be very careful with my (bad) back. But, while I could really feel the yoga poses and stretches burning and using my muscles, it was a good, warm burning and relaxing experience. I’m just madly in love with yoga! :-)

After my date with yoga, I had breakfast:

    Blueberry-Kiwi Salad

    blueberry-kiwi salad, raw food

1 whole kiwi, peeled + sliced

    handful frozen blueberries

    Yum-O!

I also had some herbal tea and, of course, added a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar to one of my glasses of water.

    About mid-morning, I had my daily shot….

    E3 Live Brain On

    E3 Live Brain On

I think the Brain On formula tastes just a little stronger (or a little different) than the original E3 Live I’ve tried but it’s definitely do-able for me. You could always disguise the taste (if it’s too strong–aka green–for you) in a smoothie or juice. I just take a tablespoon straight up. What? I love my greens–and I’m lovin’ how it makes me feel: clear-minded and mentally alert! :-)

    Juicy Ingredients!

    juice ingredients, yoga day 3

4 small heirloom organic beets, with leaves (from my garden)

    3 organic carrots

2 heirloom organic cucumbers (from my garden)

    small apple

    2 handfuls spinach

    handful Alfalfa sprouts

    1-inch piece of ginger

medium heirloom organic bell pepper (from my garden)

    1 whole kiwi, peeled

    Raw Beauty!

    raw swirls

    Juice Pulp

    (Looks Like Confetti!)

    raw juice pulp

    Yummy Juices

    juice conconction, yoga day 3

    Raw Lunch

raw juices, carrots, celery, yoga day 3

    1 celery stalk, cut up

    1 carrot, cut up

shaker cup full of today’s juicy concoction

+ a scoop of berry flavored Amazing Grass SuperFood powder

(To learn more about this berry-licious superfood powder, click on the photo below! :-) )

    Snack

I had another carrot and another celery stalk (I was craving carrots and celery today! LOL)

And…. some of the juiciest, most delicious…

    Organic Cherries

    organic cherries

    Dinner

I thought about having my other juice in the place of my dinner but then I had an overwhelming craving for the following spinach-based salad. I absolutely adore baby spinach leaves–they’re my favorite veggie! I love them raw, in juices, in smoothies, in salads… you get my point. :-)

    Oh-So-Good Salad

spinach salad, blueberries, cucumbers, hemp seeds, raw okra

generous handful of baby spinach leaves

heirloom organic cucumber slices (from my garden)

    generous handful of fresh blueberries

    Manitoba Harvest hemp seeds (Yum!)

2 stalks heirloom organic okra, sliced

Have you ever eaten okra raw? It’s delicious! I’m serious! The above combo is absolutely YUM! What’s your favorite salad combo? Do share!

    18 July 2009

    lotus flower, yoga

    Hi, y’all!

I hope you enjoyed my reflections on the 30-day juice fast.

I started my day out with yoga again this morning. I love it! :-)

I took Cindy‘s advice and stuck with the Yoga for Newbies video.

I’m learning about different poses and how (majorly) important breathing is!

This new yoga journey is sooooooooooooooo exciting!

Okay, now for raw eats throughout today:

    • handful of heirloom, organic banana peppers (from my garden)
    • a green apple
    • a not-so-delicious plum
    • a handful of organic dark cherries (Yum!)
    • a handful of raw, unsalted nuts/seeds
    • small handful of grapes
    • half of a (big) carrot

(I know that doesn’t really seem like a lot of food, but when I’ve been juice fasting I’m not that hungry once I start eating again.)

I also drank lots of herbal tea with lemon. (I forgot my warm lemon water this morning, though!)

My blender died on me, so no green monsters for a while. :-( And (shame on me!) I didn’t have a raw juice, either! I’m making time tomorrow to juice some raw goodness and absorb all those living enzymes, vitamins, and nutrients my body absolutely loves.

Do you enjoy yoga as part of your exercise routine? What’s your favorite part about yoga: the stretching, the relaxing, the benefits? Do you combine the raw food diet, raw juices, or raw juice fasting with yoga? Who is your favorite yoga instructor? What’s your favorite type of yoga to practice? Tell us all about it!

Coming next: various foods I’ve eaten when breaking other juice fasts I’ve been on, and also why I don’t incorporate vegetable broth into my juice fasting regimen like some juice fasters do.

    17 July 2009

Do the best you can and can the rest! (Words of wisdom from my grandma :-) )

Someone asked me if I’d summarize what my goals were for the 30-day juice fast and reflect on my journey. So, here it is…

I’ve thought about it, and my goals for this 30-day juice fast were to:

    • Cleanse and detox my body from when I fell off the 100% raw wagon.
    • Enter a calmer, more peaceful state of being.
    • Do some old-fashioned soul searching.
    • Break my coffee habit.

And I accomplished all of those things–even though I had to break the fast a tad early due to being attacked by those nasty red wasps and getting sick from that.

While I was on this juicing journey, I also made a decision (well, I made several but this one is about my relationship with food): I’ve decided to stop being so hard on myself.

During my 100% raw “spurts”, here’s the foods I miss the most:

    • organic Greek yogurt (Oikos is my favorite!)
    • omelets (stuffed with veggies)
    • steel cut oats (with cinnamon, raw honey, and nuts)
    • steamed brussel sprouts (with coconut oil and herbs)
    • steamed asparagus (drizzled with coconut oil)
    • mock mashed potatoes (made from cauliflower)
    • stir fry
    • baked sweet potatoes

As I pondered the above foods, I realized something (an epiphany?)–all of the foods I’ve listed here are on the extreme end of what’s considered “healthy”.

I’m not craving greasy fast food here, people. I’m not wanting

donuts or cake every day. Ice cream isn’t my weakness.

Life is short, you know? So, if I wake up one morning and crave an omelet (made from free-range, farm fresh, organic eggs–from my own farm–and overflowing with yummy veggies, I’m going to eat it!

I have been high-raw for the past several years. The high-raw lifestyle has improved my health, helped me lose over 100 pounds, and is the foundation of my diet life.

Gena, over at Choosing Raw, recently answered a reader’s question about how “perfect” her eating habits are. Her post truly resonated with me.

The message I took away from her post is that while eating an omelet once in a while, or having some cooked steel cut oats is something I feel is healthy and make me feel good, it may make you cringe (whether you’re on the 100% raw side of the fence or the processed, cooked food side).

So, if what I eat seems totally unattainable to you, don’t try to eat just like me. If I can inspire you to clean up your diet (even a little!), that’s fantabulous! :-)

    Example:

Maybe, at least part of the time, you could have a big salad with fish on the side instead of your normal fish sandwich with greasy fries. So, if you feel like you can’t live without your fish sandwich and fries, just choose the healthier option I’ve listed (or one similar) at least part of the time. Sound good?

Oh, and I forgot to mention what I ate yesterday:

    • small banana for breakfast
    • I fasted through lunch
    • For dinner, I had a yummy salad:

    Yum-O!

spinach salad, heirloom carrots, raw okra, blueberries

(Note: All of the following ingredients are heirloom + organic from my own garden, except for the hemp seeds, spinach, and blueberries!!) :-)

    handful baby spinach leaves

    handful heirloom lettuce

    Manitoba Harvest hemp seeds

raw heirloom okra (it’s delicious, y’all!)

    handful blueberries

    few heirloom baby carrots

Enjoy the journey; make the better choice most of the time; and treat yourself for your dedication–you deserve it!

    17 July 2009

I hope you enjoyed following my 30-day juice fast! I know I enjoyed the challenge! :-)

So, what’s next for Raw Juice Girl? Exercise. What kind of exercise? Yoga! Yep, I’ve decided to give yoga a try. After years of having folks tell me I should try yoga to strengthen/possibly heal my back, I’ve made up my mind to just go for it. I’ve started with Polly’s Yoga for Newbies video and am just ecstatic!

    Rewind.

Last night, I slept so well! I need that rest after the craziness in my life lately. I woke up refreshed and excited to have my “date with Polly”! :-)

    The verdict? I LOVED it!!!

The stretching felt sooooooooooooooooo phenomenal and it was such a peaceful, relaxing way to start my day!

I love the Cow and Child’s poses so far, but all of it was fantabulous! The breathing, focusing, relaxing, stretching… Just perfect!

Tomorrow, I’m considering trying Polly’s Yoga for Low Back.

What do you think? Should I continue with the newbie video or switch it up every single day? Do you practice yoga? Who’s your favorite instructor? Why are they your favorite? Do you practice yoga at home, or attend classes at a local studio? Fill me in! :-)

    16 July 2009

Hmmm…. I forgot to drink my warm lemon water on an empty stomach this morning! Ah well, can’t always get it right, can we? ;-)

I really didn’t have an appetite at all this morning, so I went with my feelings and skipped breakfast. I wasn’t craving a juice either. I did have a glass of cold herbal tea with lemon.

I do want to share with you what worked for my swollen arm (from all those nasty red wasp stings)….

    Here’s what I tried:

    • wrapping it in vinegar
    • baking soda wrap
    • leaving chewing tobacco on for hours

Know what finally worked? Raw onion! Yep, I knew about the onion’s healing properties. Sheesh, I’ve even written about it (Onion for an Oops!).

I sliced raw onion and placed it on the parts of my arm where the wasps stung me (my arm got the worst of the stings) and then wrapped plastic wrap around my arm so the onions would stay in place overnight. The next morning? Almost ALL of the swelling was GONE and the pain and most of the itching was, too! Yippee! So, while the tobacco (wet) does help when held on a fresh sting, you can also give the old raw onion a try if you should get stung by a nasty flying creature. :-)

    Lunch, Anyone?

I decided to have a small salad. It was sooooooooooooooooooo delicious, and very easy on my system. :-)

    Spinach-Blueberry-Hemp (Seed) Salad

    spinach salad, blueberries, hemp seeds

    handful baby spinach leaves

    handful blueberries

sprinkles of Manitoba Harvest hemp seed

    Dinner

I was going to have a juice for dinner (and really I should have) but I’m still getting my strength back up so I copped out and threw another small salad together–it saved me all the labor of dragging out the juicer, preparing the produce, juicing them, and cleaning it all up. I was just too tired after losing so much sleep to do all that. So, another salad it was…

    Heirloom Salad

    heirloom salad

(Note: ALL of the vegetables in the photo above (except the spinach leaves and hempseed) are heirloom + organic from MY garden!!)

    baby spinach leaves

    snap peas

    sliced cucumber

    raw okra (yeah, it’s delish!)

    hemp seeds

    Manitoba Harvest

    Manitoba Harvest, shelled hemp seed

    Hemp Seeds

Manitoba Harvest, shelled hemp seed, inside

I’m really LOVING these Manitoba Harvest hemp seeds. They’re nutty, delicious, and so good for you! (More about these babies in an upcoming post! )  I had received these before starting my 30-day juice fast so I tried ‘em a few different ways: On my salad, in smoothies, etc. And I love ‘em!

    Reflections

So, what should have actually been day 30 of my juice fast, was day 2 of my back-to-eating program. It didn’t end the way I had hoped, but I did give it my best shot. Not everyone would have sailed through a broken juicer, an out-of-commission back, and being attacked by a swarm of the biggest, nastiest, red wasps like I did–and for that, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished this time around. Sure, I could have finished the 30 days. I only liked about a day and a half, but this is where I’m different than other folks: I listen to my body. I know what it can and can’t do and it hasn’t failed me yet. Listening to my body has brought me a long way. I’ve lost over 100 pounds and have juice fasted extensively–for up to 52 days at a time. Sure, I’ve fasted for 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, etc. Shorter fasts are awesome, refreshing, and are absolutely a great thing to do. But just like with runners, who challenge themselves to run greater distances in less time, etc., someone like me who has been on a long journey of juice fasting, likes to challenge themselves –and their bodies– to a deeper level of cleansing, healing, and accomplishment.

Don’t forget about the contests! And catch up on the juicy details of my 30-day juice fast.

    16 July 2009

Wow, do I ever wish I could hit the rewind button and go back to yesterday morning!

Last night was simply atrocious. My arm kept swelling and throbbing and hurting and I didn’t get ANY sleep. None. Zilch. Zero. That makes for a VERY exhausted raw juice girl! :-(

I finally gave in and got up at 5 a.m. That’s early for me, but there was absolutely no way I was going to be sleeping any time soon with all that pain.

I probably should have just laid in bed because not long after I got up, it started….

My tummy was turned inside-out! I started throwing up and couldn’t stop. Now, I’m no medical doctor, but guessing from how my body normally works, I’d say that my system must have been overloaded from all those red wasp stings and it made me sick, overall (I’ve never thrown up on a juice fast before, and I’ve done a 52-day juice fast!).

I can’t count how many times I threw up.

My Mom urged me to eat a couple of crackers to try to calm my tummy.

“But, Mom, this is day 29! Day 29!!! I only have the rest of today and tomorrow to complete my 30-day juice fast!!”

I was horrified by the thought of breaking my fast–and not the way I had planned on breaking it, at that! :-(

Since I was way too sick to handle my daily warm lemon water, I tried sipping on a glass if ice-cold herbal tea. That helped a little. But, still, I kept throwing up.

I was really weak and in a LOT of pain from the swelling/throbbing of my arm where so many wasps stung in one area.

I hated to do it, folks, but I know my body. I know how far I can push myself. And I had reached my limit.

    Broken

Breaking a juice fast is a very special event. When I decided to share this juice fast with you all, I had visions of sharing photos and details of my first raw meal after the fast. I planned on telling you why I chose raw fruit (because of all the enzymes that aid digestion) and why I didn’t choose vegetables (because they’re harder to digest when coming off a fast).

The fast wasn’t the only thing that was broken here: My heart and spirit were as well.

    Cowboy girl Up

So, as my neighbor says: It was time to cowboy girl up and realize I’d reached my limits and that more importantly than stopping at the end of day 30, I should love my health enough to do what’s best for me at the time–and not worry about what the world would think of me for breaking the fast just a tad early.

So, I sucked up my pride (cowgirled up) and listened to mom: I nibbled on a couple of salty crackers. They were organic, but still….

I also nibbled on a piece of ginger.

“You look like death.” Mom said (thanks for the compliment, Mom! LOL). I took that as a cue to lay back down. My tummy finally settled down enough for me to get in a decent nap.

I knew I needed something but I didn’t really have the strength to drag out the juicer. Since I’d already nibbled on a couple of salty crackers (I’m still upset that I did this!!! :-( ) I decided to make a green monster. Next best thing, right?

    Amazing Green Monster

    green monster recipe, green smoothie

    1/3 cup fresh blueberries

1 scoop berry flavored Amazing Grass SuperFood powder

    1 big handful spinach

    4 ice cubes

    1/2 cup herbal tea

(This needed “something” so I added a tiny drizzle of raw honey–then it was perfect!

And it wasn’t as thick as I normally make my smoothies, so it was almost juice-like! :-) )

    A Monster Alright!

I had all my ingredients in the blender–and it wouldn’t start. Can you believe it?! Ugh. I was really tired and sick and not in the mood for a dead blender at all! :-( I’m not one to waste, so I dumped the contents of the blender into the food processor and started it up. (Where there’s a will, eh?) ;-)

    Red Wasp Stings

    red wasp attack

This photo doesn’t do my arm justice. Several stings were on the other side of my arm (not visible in this photo) and my arm was swollen double its normal size (or more!). Very painful. It felt like burning, heavy concrete that was about to explode and worse.

Since I didn’t get to share a raw meal that broke my fast, I’ll be writing a post with tips for breaking a juice fast, possible foods you could eat, and also share ideas for meals in the coming days after a fast.

What really gets me about this, is that I wasn’t hungry! I wasn’t even craving food and didn’t NEED to break the fast–even on day 30. I could have kept going.

I blame that yoga mat! LOL ;-)

    Until tomorrow… happy juicing!

    16 July 2009

Today (day 28 of this 30-day juice fast) started like any other day: by drinking warm lemon water.

    Then my mind started wandering…

    Yummy Yoga

I’ve mentioned recently that I  have been researching yoga. Many of you have recommended I try it as a healing exercise for my bad back. So, I’ve been reading blog posts and articles about it and also watching videos.

Anyway, it dawned on me! I have a yoga mat in a box out in the shed! So, I went traipsing across the farm to get it. And then it happened: I opened the shed door, saw my yoga mat box, reached in to get it, and out of the blue was attacked by a swarm of the biggest, nastiest, meanest red wasps! Ouch!!! :-(

    Wicked Wasps!

I was stung several times on my arm, hand, neck, and leg. It was craziness! They were even all in my hair. I couldn’t believe it! You better believe I did a little (okay, a LOT) of screaming and dancing. (It’s okay if this mental picture makes you laugh.) :-) It really was painful, though. Seriously!

I came in the house and when I told my Mom, she rushed me over to the neighbor’s house (he smokes) and he donated 2 cigarettes worth of tobacco. He put it in a bowl and added water and then my Mom put it on the places I’d been stung and held it there. My skin was already swelling bigtime, but the tobacco really helped shrink it quickly.

When we got back home, I poured myself a glass of herbal tea and added lemon. I needed a refreshing break!

Since it seemed like I was going to be okay, and the swelling had gone down considerably, we decided to go ahead and leave to run the errands we’d planned on pre-wasp attack.

I made myself an iced, herbal tea to-go (with lemon) and grabbed a to-go bottle filled with water and a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar and hit the road.

    School Time?

And here’s the highlight of my day…

I was standing at the counter in a store with my mom and brother. And an older man walks over. He decided to make small talk: “So, are you gearing up for school to start?” He asks, enthusiastically.

I looked around to see if he was talking to me. No one else was there, so he must have asked me if I was getting ready for school. Huh?

“You mean me?” I asked, shocked.

“Yes, are you ready to go back to school?”

Okay, I’m thinking the wasp venom must have gone to my brain because I couldn’t fathom that this man was honestly asking me if I was preparing to go back to school!

“Sir, I’m almost 34 years old.” I smiled.

Total shock bombarded his face. “No, I don’t believe it!” He gasped.

Folks, I had to show him the birth date on my driver’s license!

“I thought you were 17 years old!” He said–after he was finally able to talk again.

“My daughter is an English teacher here. I thought she’d be teaching you.”

    How funny is that?! LOL

“All I can say, girl, is that life has treated you well.” He said, shaking his head and smiling. (Could it be my diet and the raw juices and fasting????) ;-)

“Actually, I am a survivor of domestic violence. I barely escaped with my life. I’ve also been through many other things.”

But, yes, I am truly blessed. :-)

And…. since I didn’t have photos of juices today, I’ll leave you with a few photos from my garden.

    Heirloom Watermelon

    heirloom watermelon

    Heirloom Cantaloupe

    heirloom cantaloupe

    Heirloom Cucumber

    heirloom cucumbers

(These are all doubling and tripling in size due to the rain the past few days!!) Eeeek! :-)

I didn’t squeeze in my E3 Live or Amazing Grass powder today and I ended up just drinking water and herbal tea–it was too hectic and crazy! :-(

Oh, and on the way home, we stopped and bought some chewing tobacco. Yep, how funny is that?! Know what kind? Long cut natural (next time I’ll get short cut!) ;-)

    16 July 2009

My back pain had eased up quite a bit by today: day 27 of my 30-day juice fast.

Bring on the warm lemon water! :-)

    Breakfast

I wasn’t feeling like drinking a bunch of juices today–I just didn’t crave them. I felt, instead, to just be. So I skipped the breakfast juice and had herbal tea.

    Snack

My mid-morning snack consisted of E3 Live‘s Brain On (a tablespoon, straight up). I’m lovin’ how this stuff makes me feel refreshed and aLIVE! :-)

I also had a glass of water with a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar.

    Lunch

For lunch, I finished off the last of the heirloom lettuce concoction. It had a scoop of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood powder in it.

Heirloom Lettuce Juice + Amazing Grass

(Want to be AMAZED? Click on the photo below to learn all about this super powder!) :-)

    Dinner

I was totally content to sip more herbal tea, with lemon, for my dinner. (Sorry I didn’t take photos of my herbal tea–I didn’t even think about it!) Oops!

I really wasn’t hungry or craving juices today. That happens sometimes when I’m juice fasting–I just go for a day or two with no juice and go into a deeper level of fasting/cleansing. I love it!

And that’s it for day 27!

    Until tomorrow… happy juicing!

    16 July 2009

And here we are: day 26 of my 30-day juice fast!

This morning, I drank my warm lemon water. I wasn’t craving juice at all so I went with my feelings and skipped the breakfast juice.

I did have some water with organic apple cider vinegar.

    Snack

I livened up my brain with E3 Live‘s Brain On (I took a tablespoon straight up)!

    Lunch + Dinner

I had a TON of freshly cut heirloom lettuce from my garden to use up, so I thought I’d use it as the base for today’s juice.

    Heirloom Lettuce Concoction

    Heirloom lettuce concoction, day 26

    2 small cucumbers

    1 medium tomato (from a friend’s garden)

    3 strawberries

    2 carrots

    2 handfuls spinach leaves

5 big handfuls heirloom lettuce (from my garden)

    1 green apple

    5 stalks celery

a 1-inch piece of ginger root

    Heirloom Rainbows!

    heirloom rainbows, raw juice

    Amazing (Grass) Green Goodness

    Amazing Grass, green juice

(Made about 40 ounces: enough to fill up a 3-cup container + my Amazing Grass shaker cup)

I added a scoop of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood (Natural) powder. This juice tasted REALLY green, with a hint of spicy gingerness–and I LOVED it! I’m going to make it again! :-)

(To learn more about this AMAZING green superfood–or to purchase your own–click on the photo below!) :-)

    15 July 2009

Day 25… Sounds crazy, eh? It’s amazing to me that I’ve made it this far on this 30-day juice fast, considering that I’ve plowed right on through a broken juicer + my back going out on me and the pain zapping my strength.

I drank my warm lemon water first thing this morning.

    Breakfast

I felt like having a cantaloupe juice with a scoop of berry flavored Amazing Grass SuperFood powder.

(Crave that amazing feeling? Click on the photo below to find out how you can!) :-)

I saved you the agony of a photo of my cantaloupe juice because it was slimy (that’s never happened before!!) and the Amazing Grass powder clumped up and it was disgusting looking! I had to throw it out–and believe me, I can’t stand being wasteful! :-(

Since my cantaloupe juice was out, I drank some of the beet concoction I made yesterday with a scoop of the berry flavored Amazing Grass powder.

    Snack

I usually have my daily dose of E3 Live mid-morning, so when I looked in the fridge and noticed that my weekly portion of thawed E3 Live was used up, I decided to give the E3 Live Brain On a try. (I’ll be reviewing the E3 Live and E3 Live Brain On in upcoming posts–and there’s a contest coming for it, too!)

    E3 Live, Brain On!

    E3 Live, Brain On

E3 Live has to be kept frozen to maintain its freshness. Each week (according to the directions), I take it out of the freezer and defrost it a little by sitting it in a bowl of hot water. After a few minutes, I pour a few tablespoons in a small glass jar and put the lid on and keep that in the fridge. It’s recommended to only keep about a week’s worth in the fridge at once. Keep the rest frozen. I prefer my E3 Live as a dose by itself–it really does make me feel alive! I can’t wait to see how/if this Brain On enhances my mental clarity and memory.

I also had some water with a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in it.

    Lunch + Dinner

I enjoyed some herbal tea with lemon and wasn’t hungry so I didn’t have a lunch juice. For dinner, I had another of my beet concoction juices and called it a day.

    Until tomorrow… happy juicing!

Like always, I drank my warm lemon water first thing this morning, day 24 of this 30-day juice fast.

    Breakfast

I felt like having cucumber juice for breakfast. I added a scoop of berry flavored Amazing Grass SuperFood powder to it.Yum!

The beet concoction made 3 cups. I diluted it 50/50 and ended up with 6 cups.

Note to self: If I make this beet concoction again, I’ll remember that it included a LOT of lettuce and does NOT need to be diluted. It tasted very bland and just wasn’t fun to drink! :-( (I added a splash of cantaloupe juice to jazz it up a little.)

    15 July 2009

Day 23 of my 30-day juice fast was another rough one with my back, so I didn’t even take any photos of my juices (Sorry! :-( )

I did follow my normal “routine” of drinking warm lemon water as soon as I woke up….

    Breakfast

I had some leftover watermelon juice from yesterday, so I drank that as my breakfast juice + I added a scoop of berry flavored Amazing Grass SuperFood powder.

(Want to feel AMAZING? Click on the following photo to learn how!) :-)

    Snack

My mid-morning snack was more watermelon juice (flushing my kidneys, yay!). I also drank some water with a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar.

    Lunch

I felt truly refreshed as I sipped cucumber juice at lunch time. And I had my daily shot of E3 Live, which truly makes me feel aLIVE! :-)

    Snack

For my mid-afternoon snack, I finished off the last of the Amish-grown cabbage concoction (recipe here).

    Dinner

I ended day 23 with another refreshing glass of cucumber juice, which is absolutely one of my favorite juices in the world! :-)

    15 July 2009

Day 22 of this 30-day juice fast started out with warm lemon water.

    Breakfast

I had some leftover watermelon (from the 4th of July and my Dad’s birthday picnic) so I thought I should use it up and not let it go to waste. It was half of a watermelon, and I juiced the rind, seeds, and all.

Watermelon is soooooooooooo healthy for us! It contains the following vitamins: C, A, B6, B1. It also provides antioxidants, lycopene, magnesium, and potassium.

“Watermelon is not only great on a hot summer day, this delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.”–WH Foods

Watermelon may also protect against macular degeneration. How cool and refreshing is that information??!! :-)

    Watermelon Tower

    juicing watermelon

    Watermelon Juice

    lots of watermelon juice

I ended up with 6 cups of watermelon juice + enough to fill my Amazing Grass shaker cup, which I added a scoop of berry flavored Amazing Grass SuperFood powder to.

    All Shook Up!

    all shook up with grass

    Yum!

(For more AMAZING information on this superfood powder, click on the photo below and read all about it!) :-)

    Snack

For a snack, I had my daily shot of E3 Live and a glass of water with organic apple cider vinegar.

    Lunch

I enjoyed a(nother!) yummy glass of watermelon juice for lunch… I added a scoop of the berry flavored Amazing Grass powder for some extra oomph. :-)

I also had a lot of cucumbers to use up so cucumber juice, it was! I (for some crazy reason) forgot to count how many cucumbers I used for this juice recipe. (I’m thinking maybe it was 5-7 of ‘em???)

    Cucumbers are good for you:

“The flesh of cucumbers is primarily composed of water but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling. Cucumbers’hard skin is rich in fiber and contains a variety of beneficial minerals including silica, potassium and magnesium.”–WH Foods

Besides those yummy benefits, cucumbers are great for your skin, (may) help lower your blood pressure, and contain vitamins C, A, and folate and fiber. They also provide tryptophan–and they taste sooooooooooooooooooooooo delicious when they’re juiced!

    Cucumber juicing tip:

When juicing cucumbers, you’ll want to remove the peel IF you’ve bought non-organic cucumbers that have been waxed. If they’re organic, leave that peel on–it’s very beneficial!

A refreshing watermelon juice ended day 22 for me. SO tasty! And I enjoyed it with some fresh air, outside. :-)
