Just stopping by? Have you tried my coconut peanut butter honey overnight oats yet? Or maybe you’d like to try your hand at my chocolate-covered raisin hemp balls or raw tuna fish-less salad. And you simply HAVE to try my latest, simple creation: Coconut Peanut Butter Cream. YUM! And don’t forget to take a peek at my Thanksgiving holiday eats + treats – or my interview with ShimmerOrganics owner, Lisa Ann Turkel!
It’s almost unfathomable to envision a blog turning into a book turning into a movie – when it’s yours, that is!
I finally watched Julie & Julia (although I’d never read the book, Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously
). I must say, I was pleasantly entertained. I loved every minute of the movie. From Julie’s excitement over starting her blog, to Julia’s enthusiasm and YEARS of hard work that went into her book (typed on a typewriter!) it was all beautifully portrayed and very enlightening.
I won’t spoil the entire movie for you, though! I totally think you should watch it. It’s definitely worth your time and money.
But just in case…
Spoiler Alert!!!!
I think Meryl Streep was fantabulous as Julia Child, and I loved Amy Adams as Julie Powell.
Julia Child was one very determined lady. She never gave up. That’s admirable! I wonder if she would have been a blogger had she been in our shoes? Ya think? Can you envision her blog: Mastering the Art of French Cooking? Can you see her creating YouTube videos; commenting on other blogs; tweeting; facebooking?
It was super fun to see the reality of a blogger’s life, too – especially home life. From the realization that a LOT of people are reading what you’re putting out there into cyber space, to the cluelessness others seem to have about exactly what a blog even is, or what it means to the blogger.
Explaining your overwhelming desire (need, actually) to blog is extremely difficult. As many gazillions of blogs as there is, there’s that many people who don’t know what one is, it seems! I’ve given up on trying to explain blogging. I just say: “I’m a freelance writer and blogger. I write about health.” And I leave it at that.
As a blogger who shares my heart with you, my fantabulous readers, I could relate to Julie as she pounded out her frustrations and joys over wading her way through Julia Child’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking – all those hundreds of pages!
After she’d been blogging for a while, she began to sense that her readers actually anticipated – and needed – her posts. Can you relate?! Of course, that’s a hard thing for a non-blogger to comprehend. It makes us bloggers seem like we have our head in the clouds, like we just think we’re SO great that numerous people could possibly be on pins and needles – just for our next post, for words that flow effortlessly (okay, not always effortlessly!
) from our minds, through our fingers, onto the keyboard, out into cyber space’s infinity.
Yeah, that feeling.
Most of all, it was sooooooooooooooooo exciting to even consider that the words we share in the posts of our little corner of the blogosphere could be read by publishers, reporters, literary agents… How fantabulous is that?!
I actually think it’s a scary – and exciting – thought at the same time, really.
Have you watched Julie & Julia? Did you get to see it at the theater, or did you rent it like me? Did you read the book first? Will you read it now? I’m the type of gal who always likes to read the book first, then the movie. I’ve found most times I like the book better. But, that’s just me.
Oh, and the ShimmerOrganics review/contest is totally in the near future – I’ve just been having some sinus trouble (swollen face and all!) and have no desire to plaster photos of my face on the Web right now. So, now my secret is out: If all goes as planned, I’ll be posting photos of my face before Lisa’s mask, while it’s on, and after it’s washed off. I actually have those already, but I wanted to show y’all before & after photos of a couple more treatments before I shared the review/contest with y’all. A little embarrassing, really, but I’m the guinea pig for y’all, ya know?! Can you wait??!! Pretty please with a (raw) cherry on top?!
And….. you might notice I put a PayPal button up in the left sidebar. I’ve explained a little over there, but I’ll be posting in-depth soon.
Happy Holidays!

“Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates
The Father of Medicine
The people behind Food Matters believe that Hippocrates truly paved the way and laid the foundation for caring for our bodies–and so do I. Sadly, though, his natural approach to health has slipped through the cracks and is a distant memory for many, and is not yet known for others. Modern medicine has evolved to a place where the vast majority of our medical world focuses on prescription medicine, handing out scripts for bottle after bottle of pills that merely mask symptoms–when they even do that. You’re left with side effects you don’t know how to handle, so you go back to the doctor and you’re prescribed more pills. Treating illness now consists of chemical therapies that kill out our immune systems. We’ve reached a place where it’s “normal” to pop a dozen pills before we walk out the door to go to work and are on a schedule to take that many sometimes a second, and even a third, time within 24 hours.
Yet, so many in our world still ignore the fact that Hippocrates was right. His theory was right on: Our food is absolutely our medicine! Ever heard that phrase you are what you eat? I’m sure you have. I know almost everyone I talk to has heard it. Some live by it; it’s their creed. Others despise it, detest it, rebel against it, and downright refuse to believe that what they put into their mouths, their bodies, has anything to do with the way they feel, what their blood pressure levels are, or how their clothes no longer fit. Go figure…
Chapters
When you insert your DVD, you’ll notice there is a Chapters section. I love this because it gives you a sneak peek of what you’re in for! Don’t cheat, though. Start at the beginning and watch it all the way through. You’ll be so glad you did.

You’ll learn all sorts of awesome things! This film really makes you reflect on what you put in your mouth, how old it is, whether it’s really feeding your body–or if it’s feeding disease.
Note: You’ll also learn about natural cancer therapies and how to detox, lose weight, and keep it off!
Inspiration
I love the strong message of hope and healing Food Matters brings. As someone who has lost over 100 pounds and steadily improved my health by living a high-raw (and at times, 100% raw) food lifestyle + raw juices, smoothies, and juice fasting, I am extremely aware of how food is not only my medicine, but my strength, my healing, and literally my future–or the lack, thereof!
It excites me that as the film proceeds, anticipation about being healthier increases and you truly take away a sense of hope that it’s not too late to turn your health around in the right direction. Sure, it may take a while. Yes, it may be hard most of the time. But as long as we have a breath in our body, there is hope for better health! (I do realize there are situations that may be irreversible, where the patient is too near death to make a U-turn. So, I’m not preaching miracles here–although I do believe in ‘em!
)
Experts
You’ll hear Experts chime in on why the quality of and type of food we eat truly matters. Here’s a glimpse of what each of them have to say about the medical industry, our non-organic farming methods, raw foods, and more…
“Good health makes a lot of sense, but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars.”–Andrew W. Saul, Ph.D, Therapeutic Nutrition Specialist and Author
“Dr. Paul Kouchakoff was the first to show in the 1930′s that if you ate a diet that was more than 51% cooked food, that your body would react to the food as if it was being invaded by a foreign organism. Dr. Kouchakoff was the first to demonstrate that if 51% of your meals were raw, you’d have no leucocytosis; you’d actually have no white blood cell reaction, so your immune system would not be activated with a false alarm. Because we’re dealing with so many immune system issues today, we have to make sure that at least 51% of every meal that we have is raw so that we don’t overburden that already-overburdened immune system.” – David Wolfe
“How much nutritional value are you getting from food that’s at least five days old? If you’re lucky, you’re getting maybe 40% of what you need.” - Victor Zeines, Holistic Dentist & Nutritionist
Watch Online!
“The so-called fertilizer is made up of of three minerals, NPK: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Well, that’s nice BUT the problem is that the soil requires approximately 52 different minerals. So, where’s the calcium, magnesium, and the mangonese and the zinc and the iron and (…) What we’re getting, even if we eat commercial Vegetarian food, we get deficient, toxic food because with all these pesticides and chemicals and sprays and all that it’s deficient, so we can’t help but be deficient and toxic.” - Charlotte Gerson, Founder of the Gerson Institute
“How can you build a building you expect to last 100 years when you put poor building materials in?” – Dr Dan Rogers, M.D., N.M.D. (Medical Doctor and Naturopathic Doctor)
Facts
There are way too many facts shared in Food Matters for me to mention here (plus, I don’t want to give it all away!) so I’ll share just a few that really resonated with me…
- 106,000 people die each year due to adverse drug reactions.
- Today’s Medical doctors receive little, if any, training in nutrition.
- Eating a steak takes a massive amount of energy for the body to liquefy it and digest it.
- Heart disease and cancer are the two top killers in the U.S. annually.
- 39,000 people die due to unnecessary surgery–and other errors in hospitals–each year.
- 80,000 people die due to infections infections caught while in the hospital each year.
Wow, those numbers are so sad.
Cons?
I honestly can’t fathom anything negative about you watching this film–unless you consider feeling the unction to empty all the junk food out of your cabinets a con?
Convinced Yet?
Hopefully you’re convinced that food DOES matter. Maybe you’re at least interested enough to enter the contest for (SIX) chances to win a free copy. There will be TWO winners, so your odds are higher than most of my contests (which end with only one winner). One last thing, take a look in the mirror. Yeah, right now. Be honest: Are you happy with yourself? You don’t have to be overweight, or even underweight, to be unhappy with your health, how you feel, the foods you’re putting into your precious body. Are you depressed? Do you have emotional issues? Mental issues? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Enter. this. contest. Do it for life. Do it for health. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family, if you have one. Do it for your friends. Your pets. Your job. Your future. Just do it. I can’t stress enough that FOOD MATTERS!

First, I’d like to remind you about the current contest I have running: The Bolder Mat Company Yoga Mat + Stacy McCarthy’s Yoga DVD. (Contest ends Wednesday, August 19th. There are SEVEN ways to win!!)
“As always, your positive energy leaps off of my computer screen and makes me smile.”–Mika Hebeka
The morning started like any other morning (recently, anyway): I woke up, did an hour of yoga (with my Stacy McCarthy DVD), hopped in the shower, and then had a rich, creamy organic Greek yogurt with frozen blueberries on top. I checked my email, did some writing, a couple of loads of laundry and all that good stuff.
Then, I got my mail. I tore open the envelope and peered inside. Here’s what I found: Ali MacGraw – Yoga Mind & Body + a SWEET, handwritten, beautiful note card!!! Eeeeek!! Thank you so much, Mika!!!
Yoga DVD + Sweet Card
Mika had sent me the most precious gift: her all-time favorite yoga DVD, and not just any DVD–her personal yoga DVD that she’s enjoyed for the past 3 years! Gifts like this mean SO much more than new ones. It came from her heart, from her own personal belongings. Gifts like this one are what I treasure most. They mean the most because they’re thoughtful and not just grabbed off some shelf while walking through a store in a rush.
This is the first gift a reader has ever sent me–that makes it even more special!! Thank you, Mika, from the bottom of my heart. I’m so honored and blessed.
The very next morning, I practiced my hour of yoga with Mika’s DVD–I LOVED it! I was so relaxed during the Shavasana, I almost fell asleep! It’s wonderful!
Mika recently won one of my contests (for Nomi Shannon’s raw recipe books) and is starting a raw revolution in her small town. Go, Mika!!!
As Healing With (Raw) Juices grows and evolves, I dare to wonder: Where would I be without you readers? Your subscriptions increase my readership, your comments bring value to the site, your emails brighten my day and encourage me beyond belief, your presence brings joy to my life…. Thank you, Mika (you’re the bestest!!), and each of you, for continuing to be such huge blessings to me!!!
Be sure to subscribe to Healing with Juices’ Feed for free updates. You can get free updates to your email as well (sign up here). You’ll also receive inspiration, juice and smoothie recipes, and juice fasting tips and encouragement to help keep you motivated toward your ultimate health–and more personal posts about stuff that’s going on in my life PLUS get to enter all sorts of awesome contests! ![]()

First, I’d like to thank everyone who entered. I appreciated your heartfelt comments and positive attitudes.
On to the winner…
I used Random.org to generate a winner. It chose #5, and that would be Lisa. Here’s what she said:
- 5 Lisa { 04.15.09 at 8:41 pm }

Wow! This would be a very useful resource for my family. I’m particularly interested in the weight loss and detox sections.
Congratulations, Lisa! Please email me with your mailing address so I can send you your DVDs!
Next, be watching for a fun post followed by more contests: you’ll be competing for organic coconut oil, raw nuts, goji berries, raw nut butters, more books and DVDs, and more–so don’t miss out on upcoming posts!

The time has arrived for another contest!! Everyone say yay!
I’d like to take the time to send out a very warm thank you to Alex Ortner, Executive Producer for the film Raw for Thirty, who was so kind as to sponsor this contest so you’ll have an opportunity to win and watch these DVDs and start down your own (raw) journey to better health!
What You’ll Be Getting
The winner of this contest will receive the following DVDs. There are 3 DVDs total. The first is Simply Raw and the others come in a 2 disc set as part of Raw for Life: The Ultimate Encyclopedia Of The Raw Food Lifestyle. This is such an amazing set of DVDs!
On to the review…
Simply Raw
First, let me tell you: The information in the DVDs you’ll be winning in this contest is unbelievable. Talk about inspiring, motivational, heartfelt, sincere, educational…. The list just goes on and on!
The DVD, Simply Raw, is about reversing diabetes in just 30 days. How? By eating only Raw for Thirty days. The theory is that by consuming 100% raw foods, your body will find a harmonious balance and then your blood sugar will stabilize itself–at minimum improving significantly.
Simply Raw gives you a peek into the journey of six Americans who are battling diabetes. Some of them are also battling obesity. While staying at The Tree of Life in Arizona, under the supervision of Dr. Gabriel Cousens, the six individuals (with various diabetes levels and insulin problems) were carefully monitored and cared for.Looking into the lives of these people and watching their struggles, their honest attempts, and then more struggles as they tried to make it through the 30-day program just broke my heart. I’ve been obese morbidly obese. I know the pain. I know how discouraging it can be to wake up every morning with a heavy person weighing your life down and feeling like life is hopeless and like you can never, ever achieve the healthier, slimmer body you so desire.
I also used to be on diabetic medication because my blood sugar was atrocious. I related so much to the stories these people shared in this DVD. It was almost as if I were living my own morbid obesity and blood sugar problems all over again!
So, I absolutely believe in the power of raw foods and know from personal experience and my own journey that blood sugar can stabilize. I’ve lost over 100 pounds and am now eating 100% raw food–no more diabetic medication for me!
Let’s learn about the other 2 DVDs….
Raw for Life
Wow, let me just say that I’m so glad I had the opportunity to watch these two DVDs in the Raw for Life set. I love gleaning from the wisdom of anyone who has been on a path I’d like to travel. In these two DVDs, you’ll learn from 30 Experts including: David Wolfe, a Raw Food Expert, hear from Woody Harrelson (yes, actor Woody Harrelson!!) about his opinions of raw foods, and even Dr. Fred Bisci shares an incredible about of his wisdom and beliefs (he’s Matt Monarch’s inspiration, remember??).
There’s no way to cover everything in these 2 DVDs so I’ll just highlight some of what you’ll be watching below:
Disc 1:
- Starting Out on the Raw Food Diet
- Weight Loss
- Detox and Cleaning
- Raw for 30 trailer
- Wisdom of Eating Raw
- Photo Gallery
Disc 2:
- Nutrition
- Rejuvenation and Longevity
- Spiritual Aspects
- Recipes from Leading (Raw) Chefs (Not only do you get to see the recipes, you get to watch Raw Food Chefs prepare them!!)
- Photo Gallery
If you’ve been stuck in an unhealthy rut, whether it’s diabetes, obesity, blood pressure problems–or even if you’re thin but just want to feel healthier, be more fit, and have more energy you will probably never be the same after watching these 3 DVDs.
I also want to add that I simply ADORED the colorful graphics, photos, and music!
Contest Rules
You’re allowed FOUR entries for this contest:
