Hi, y’all! I’ve been crazy busy on this Amish farm lately but I haven’t forgotten about ya – promise! I do have lots more reviews and giveaways coming in the near future but gardening has kept me on my toes – or shall I say knees?!
Organic gardening isn’t the easiest, in my opinion. Some people may think it is. I don’t know. But without chemicals to kill the bugs, weeds, and grass, it keeps a gardener on their toes concocting natural recipes – plus all the grass- and weed-pulling. Phew!
The funniest thing happened today: I was literally taking out the trash and as I walked was thinking “gosh, I have a crazy craving for chocolate and peanut butter” – and the UPS man backed in to the driveway with a package (I kid you not!!!!) and I thought I’d pass out when I opened it! Inside was a couple of the chocolate-covered peanut butter protein bars and the new Lemon Lime Energy Drink Powder from Amazing Grass.
So… was this fate? Karma? Luck?
Whatever the reason that I had chocolate and peanut butter delivered to me, I am a happy girl! Thank you, Amazing Grass!!!
Of course, you know I had to break right in to one of those bars immediately. It was meant to be! I only ate half, though. Why? Because it’s dense, delish, and filling!
YUM!
About the Company
I love sharing with y’all the real people who are behind the companies whose products I review. Without them, the products I love and review wouldn’t be here. I think it’s the people who make all the difference—whether it’s a big or small company. Why? Because they’re the ones who give the company character, value, and history.
So what’s the Amazing Grass story? And what’s so amazing anyway? Check this out…
From the site:
How we got started….
We started out of our garage (well it was really a dining room table) in August of 2002 in San Francisco, California. We were two guys with a desire to build a ‘grass’ roots business that aligned with our passion for the outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. We had each spent 7 years at large telecom companies and met 4 years ago at a start-up telecom company that was trying to break the bandwidth bottleneck, but ended up going broke instead. Working in a start up environment, we witnessed first hand the effect 17 hour work days, lack of exercise and poor eating habits had on many of our colleagues. Constantly hearing people say “I’m exhausted”, “I’m sick” and “I need to get in better shape” seemed to be directly related to stress and diet.
Todd noticed that Brandon seemed immune from the common cold and the contagious mid-afternoon yawn. Brandon’s thumb is the furthest shade from green, but luckily his uncle has continued to run the family dehydrating business that his Grandfather started over 50 years ago. Brandon swore the wheat grass he’d been taking gave him more energy, a stronger immune system and an overall healthier life. He gave some to Todd along with a great book by Ron Seibel called Cereal Grass, What’s in it for you. Within weeks, Todd was a big believer…he developed increased energy throughout the day and saw his need for sleep decrease. In fact, Todd has eluded everything including the common cold since taking wheat grass. Brandon had a long list of friends that were hooked on wheat grass and would often call or stop by when they ran out. His freezer was being raided on a daily basis. (We know this sounds like a scene from Cops, but we swear it was just wheat grass.)
With the help of a college marketing class at Cal Poly SLO, their wives, families and friends, Todd and Brandon started Amazing Grass.
It is our passion to educate the world about the benefits of cereal grass, green foods and the improved quality of life from eating healthy. It is our goal to always listen to our customers and constantly improve what we do. We pledge to produce the healthiest products that offer real benefits at prices everyone can afford. It’s an amazing adventure to grow this business to reflect our dreams, passions and beliefs.
Today, Amazing Grass offers the most potent green vegetables in a convenient way that aligns with our hectic lifestyles. We take great pleasure in hearing your stories about how Amazing Grass has changed your life and encourage our new friends to write us with their stories. One timeless phrase will sum up many of our responses…”You are what you eat.” Eat Grass…Get Healthy!!!
RAWsome!

Pros
I love that it’s jam-packed with greens, nutrition, superfoods, whole foods, antioxidants, probiotics and overall health benefits. The flavor is absolutely AMAZING. I’m serious, y’all. I DO taste the peanut butter. The chocolate is DIVINE. And I really only tasted the teeniest hint of greenness. I am not even joking. These bars ROCK!
Cons
If you’re allergic to peanuts, these bars are out for you. Other than that, I really can’t think of a con here. Well, you might consider them pricey. Hi, y’all!
Sorry to make ya wait so long today for this recipe. I tweeted about drinking a black smoothie this morning and a lot of you were really intrigued. Thanks for the interest! I hope it lives up to your expectations.
I’m a HUGE fan of blackstrap molasses (did you guess that as one of the “black” ingredients??)! Not everyone likes blackstrap molasses – or has even tried it – but if you love black licorice, I just know you’ll love blackstrap molasses! It reminds me of black licorice for some reason. I especially notice a distinct black licorice flavor when I add two tablespoons to water – or to my smoothies.
Believe it or not, I’m actually NOT a fan of blackberries (the other black ingredient). I always choose a different berry (blueberries are my all-time favorite!) but this recipe (title and all) popped in to my head – and I just had to try it!
The main reason I don’t care for blackberries (not even cobbler!) is because of the little seeds that get in my teeth. It’s annoying, I think.
I should’ve blended a few more minutes because I did have some seed action happening in my smoothie – that’ was my fault, though.
Lovin’ my Simple Elegance GlassDharma straw!
And I’m really sad that my photos don’t do my black smoothie justice. For one, it was a dark, rainy day and two, I don’t have a fancy shmancy camera – or photography skills! LOL
So please forgive me and I hope you can tell just how dark the smoothie is….
Remember my Blueberry Blackstrap Bomb? I thought some of y’all might guess blackstrap molasses as one of the ingredients for this one – but you didn’t!
It. Was. Delish!
But it wasn’t today’s Black Smoothie!
I still plan on writing an in-depth post on blackstrap molasses, it’s health benefits, and why I drink it all the time. But here’s a snippet of information for you:
“Blackstrap molasses is an excellent source of manganese and copper. It is a very good source of iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. In addition, blackstrap molasses is a good source of vitamin B6 and selenium.” – WH Foods
And this tidbit of information might give you the boost you need to gobble up some blackberries….
“Blackberries are notable for their high nutritional contents of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid – a B vitamin, and the essential mineral, manganese.
Blackberries rank highly among fruits for antioxidant strength, particularly due to their dense contents of polyphenolic compounds, such as ellagic acid, tannins, ellagitannins, quercetin, gallic acid, anthocyanins and cyanidins.
Blackberries have an ORAC value (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) of 5347 per 100 grams, including them among the top-ranked ORAC fruits. Another report using a different assay for assessing antioxidant strength placed blackberry at the top of more than 1000 antioxidant foods consumed in the United States.” – Wikipedia

I LOVE the Simple Elegance (aka Shorty) glass straw for my smoothies in these short glass jars – perfect combo! And they’re available in package deals in my Raw Shop!
Oh. My. Gosh. My black smoothie was SO good and I’m SO glad I followed my crazy brainstorm and made it! It was rich and creamy and smooth and delicious – AND it was also energizing and very fun to drink!
What about you: Do you love blackstrap molasses? Hate it? Ever tried it? Does it remind you of black licorice? What about blackberries? Do you love ‘em or hate ‘em? And do you try new smoothie (or other) recipes? Or do you stick to your old, tried-and-true concoctions? Do you like black licorice? Did you eat it as a kid? I did – and have always loved it!

Hi, y’all!
Wow. The days are just flyin’ by, aren’t they?! Gosh, they are for me!
I’ve been super busy outside, gardening and doing other outside chores. Things are really coming along in the garden. I’ll have to update on the progress soon.
But today, I just had to share my grass-inspired juice/smoothie concoction with you. I have been really tired lately (organic gardening is exhausting!) and I woke up yesterday with a sore throat. Definitely not good when there’s SO much to do!
So, yesterday I hit myself with some Vitamin B and C and drank plenty of liquids and paced myself. Today I felt like wheat grass would provide just the extra oomph I needed. And while I was watering the garden this morning, I spied the rainbow chard. It called my name, I’m positive!
I plucked a few leaves and ran back in the house, excited for the raw creation that was being born in my head!
It didn’t take long to throw the ingredients in the blender and whip up a glass of….
“Rainbow Grass”
That’s right: Rainbow Grass!
Note the glass straw lookin’ so elegant and eco-friendly? Those beautiful babies are now available in my Raw Shop! Go ahead, check ‘em out. I’ll wait.
![]()
Of course, I chose the (fun!) title of this drink based on the (rainbow) chard and the wheat grass.
Freshly Picked (Rainbow) Chard

And the runt…

Rainbow Grass Juice-Smoothie Concoction Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 (frozen) banana
- 1 scoop Amazing Grass Wheat Grass powder
- 1 cup herbal tea
- 5 1/2 Rainbow Chard leaves (5 the size of my hand, 1 half that size) Freshly picked from my garden right before going in to this recipe!
- 4 ice cubes
Directions:
Toss above ingredients in to your blender and give it a few whirls until everything is blended nicely. Serves one big appetite or two smaller ones.
Note:
This drink is actually more like a juice consistency, but still has a (runny) smoothie volume to it. If you like your smoothies super thick, cut back on the herbal tea (or liquid of your choice). I personally prefer my smoothies on the thicker side, but this was so super delicious and energizing, I’ll definitely recreate it again – and soon!
Grassy Goodness
About the Recipe
I urge you to try my Rainbow Grass recipe – even if you are terribly afraid of green juices/smoothies! What is so RAWsome about this drink, I discovered, is that I tasted the fresh deliciousness of the rainbow chard, the “greenness” of the wheat grass (definitely NOT overpowering, though!) and the sweetness – and creaminess – of the frozen banana. The herbal tea allows you to get in some antioxidants and herbal tea benefits, which is great for those who aren’t really “tea” people. I could go on and on about this drink, but I’ll have to trust y’all to try it for yourselves – or just take my word for it!
Hated it!
Burning Questions I have for you:
1. Have you ever tried wheat grass? Do you love Amazing Grass as much as I do? I even added wheat grass and other Amazing Grass products on my last 30-day juice fast. I’ve done a LOT of juice fasting and several 30-day ones (plus a 52-day juice fast) and I could really, really tell the difference in how I felt by adding the Amazing Grass powders. I love ‘em!
2. What about those glass straws – aren’t they something?! I really do love the Beautiful Bends most. It’s just like drinking from a bendable straw when I was a kid – only now it’s an eco-friendly habit and no plastic is wasted or harming the environment! And I’m SO excited that I can offer them to you in my Raw Shop!
3. Will you try this juice-smoothie concoction of mine or is it too “green” for you? Are you someone who is willing to try new things or do you cringe at the thought of something crossing your lips that you’re not accustomed to?
4. And how is May going for you? Can you believe Mother’s Day is this weekend? I have a wonderful mother to celebrate with. I hope you do, too! And if you don’t, I’d share mine if I could!!!
Fill me in! I miss chatting with you all!!!

I slept really well again last night. I woke up this morning feeling very refreshed and thinking about everything on my to-do list. I hopped up and put the tea kettle on for my warm lemon water, which I had about an hour before my breakfast juice.
Breakfast
For day 16 of this 30-day juice fast, I had a pineapple needing to be used up so that’s what I juiced for breakfast.
Pineapple, Chopped

100% Pineapple Juice

Diluted Pineapple Juice
(About 60% juice, 40% water)

Pineapple Popsicles!

I had enough pineapple juice to fill up my Amazing Grass cup, my E3 Live cup (love both of ‘em!) and also make pineapple pops for snacks. Oh, and there was still a little dab in the juicing machine cup and I drank it straight up!
About mid-morning, I also had a glass of water with organic apple cider vinegar.
E3 Live
(My morning shot of E3 Live green goodness!)

Lunch & Dinner
As the day progressed, I really felt just blah and exhausted. I have been expecting a day like this, honestly. I’ve had several fantabulous, high-energy days and I knew one of these “off days” would hit soon. I could really feel my body go into a deeper level of healing/cleansing today. Whew! What a day!
Since I wasn’t feeling all that great, I decided to juice my dinner at lunch time so I wouldn’t have to drag out the juicer and clean it all up again later this evening. So that’s what I did. I compiled the following ingredients, doubling them so I’d end up with enough juice…
Juicy Concoction

1 whole cucumber, peeled (because it wasn’t organic)
2 apples, whole
3 small beets
3 ounces alfalfa sprouts
2 – 1-inch ginger pieces (peel and all)
whole lemon (peel and all)
14 (heirloom, organic) Rainbow Chard leaves (from my garden)
15 (heirloom, organic) beet leaves (from my garden)
Psychedelic Swirls

Raw Beauty

This juice was SO DELICIOUS! I love my beet juice!! And the ginger came through in each taste so nicely. LOVED it!!!
This afternoon, I enjoyed one of the pineapple popsicles I made. I enjoyed the fresh air while I was at it.
Snack: Pineapple Pop

New Books for Review/Contest!

And guess what came in the mail the other day: books by Dr. Bruce Fife!!! I’m really excited about this. Dr. Fife was impressed by my interest in natural medicine, particularly oil pulling and he also wanted me to review his coconut water book. And that means an upcoming contests because he sent one of each for me and one of each to give away!!! Yay!!! Thanks so much, Dr. Fife!! We appreciate it!!
As soon as I’ve had time to thoroughly read each book, I’ll post an honest, complete review of each and host a contest for each book (probably as a combo gift set).
And, of course, I had a glass of my lunch juice for dinner and loved every single sip. Beets have superpowers, in my opinion!
Today was still a good day, even though I didn’t feel all that great. I know this because I have to take the bad with the good and realize that my body is doing what it needs to do to cleanse, heal, and rejuvenate.
Tomorrow is day 17! Totally crazy! See you tomorrow evening for a recap of tomorrow’s juicy events!
Until tomorrow… happy juicing!

This has been the BEST day!! I slept wonderfully last night. Just fantabulous!!
I don’t have a huge report with photos today because I honestly only had one cup of juice all day long. It wasn’t intentional. It just happened.
I started the day with warm lemon water, like always. And then about an hour later (I just wasn’t craving a juice!) I had the last of my defrosted pinapple-strawberry juice. I added ice and the berry flavored Amazing Grass Green SuperFood powder (just click on the photo below to learn more). It was delicious and really gave me a ton of energy. I’m telling you, people, I’ve always been pretty hesitant about green powders but I’m SOLD on this stuff. I LOVE it! (Thank you Amazing Grass team!!!)
After that morning pineapple-strawberry juice with Amazing Grass powder, I made up a bottle of water with organic apple cider vinegar and headed over to a neighbor’s house. (I was invited over for just a fun day of singing, etc.) I ended up staying longer than I originally intended. I didn’t take any juice with me because I only planned on staying for 2-3 hours and stayed double that.
I didn’t feel weak or tired or anything. I drank plenty of water and herbal tea with lemon and felt great today. We all sang, laughed, (the others ate) and had such a fun time. The weather was beautiful with a breeze and I couldn’t have asked for a better day. It was perfect!!
I do sometimes take 1-3 days during a long juice fast where I only drink water anyways so this pretty much juiceless day is nothing out of the ordinary for me.
But if you’re planning a juice fast and end up deciding to leave the house and there might be a chance you’ll be gone for longer than you intended, take a couple of juices with you (frozen ahead of time, if you wish–they can defrost while you’re out for the day). I could have done that (I have some in the freezer) but I just honestly didn’t expect to stay as long as I did. If I had ended up feeling weak or faint, I’d be concerned but I felt great all day and am extremely happy with how day 13 went!

Happy Father’s Day!
First, I want to say I’m so thankful for a great Dad!! And I’d like to wish all those great dad’s out there a very blessed, safe, and HAPPY Father’s Day!! Also, if you’re a single Mom, today’s your day too–kudos to you for being both parents!!!
And… for those of you who don’t have a Dad today, my heart aches for you, you’re in my heart and prayers!!
Details
Day 6 of this 30-day juice fast has been another fantabulous day! I’m sooooooooo excited. I love days like this when everything seems so “right”, mind, body, and soul: I’ve felt energetic, am not hungry at all, and I’ve felt so much mental clarity/sharpness today!!
Breakfast/Snack
Again, I started my day off with lemon water (recipe here) and then reached for a carrot-spinach-sprout juice. I was still craving more juice (and feeling just a tad bit tired) so I had some of the “brown” juice–which is only brown due to the beets mixing with the greens.
I then had water with organic apple cider vinegar. A little later, I had a glass of herbal tea with lemon.
Almost forgot! I had my daily tablespoon of E3 Live (straight up).
Juice Fasting on a Holiday
This is where sacrifice comes in. It isn’t always easy to fast or juice fast right on through holidays or special occasions. July 4th is also coming up–I know I’ll be juice fasting through that event as well. So, while my family enjoyed this…
Father’s Day Meal
(Salmon cake, cooked (mixed) greens, corn on the cob with sea salt)

(The greens: turnip greens, heirloom rainbow chard, heirloom beet greens)
Dessert
(Mandarin orange cake with crushed pineapple frosting)

My Lunch
(Of course, I’ve had the above meal–and dessert– before, so I know how delicious it is. I kept to my juice fasting regimen and enjoyed a green juice with Amazing Grass Wheat Grass.)

Yum-O!

Amazing Grass
Let me just say, I know why the company named themselves: Amazing Grass–this Wheat Grass of theirs is truly AMAZING! I loooooooooooove how it makes me feel. I definitely (highly!) recommend it. I love the packets because you could carry them in your purse (or pocket for those who don’t carry purses, and for the guys) and pop it in water, a smoothie, or juice wherever you are.
Snack
No snack juice today–the Wheat Grass packet in my green juice is really keeping me happy. I’ve had more herbal tea and water (of course).
Dinner
For dinner, I’m planning either a brown or a green juice. Haven’t decided yet. I love them both! Decisions, decisions.
I’ll update when I decide.
Is it the Juice Fast???
So far today, TWO people have told me I look SIXTEEN! Is it the juice fast?

Day 4 of this 3o-day juice fast has been crazy! I definitely feel the detox–big time. I’ve had a major headache most of today, have felt very emotional, and have really felt tired. That’s all normal for me. Emotional days slip up here and there while juice fasting (for some people) because of the body detoxing.
There is good news, though, so keep reading!
Breakfast
I had my usual cup of hot lemon water. About half an hour or so later, I decided to have a green juice–with a packet of Amazing Grass Wheat Grass powder.
Amazing/Wheat Grass Juice

In goes the packet

All shook up!

Lovin’ my shaker cup!

I’ll be honest, I totally expected the wheat grass powder to knock my socks off. In other words, I prepared to pucker! LOL But, that didn’t happen. It really didn’t taste bad!!! I was shocked–and happy! I waited to see how I felt and I totally could feel the difference. It was like a burst of energy–and I really needed that today. Kudos to Amazing Grass for making health taste great!
After this, I also had a tall glass of water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. And then I had a glass of herbal tea.
Then something truly AMAZING happened! I had forgotten about a Jack LaLanne Juicer I had stored in the basement. (How on EARTH could I forget something like that??!!) Well, this is one of the juicers I thought had burnt out. If I remember correctly, it even smoked! Yes! So instead of throwing it away, I boxed it up and hoped it’d work again someday–then I moved to this Amish farm and forgot about it. It was like Christmas today–seriously! I washed this baby up and plugged her in–praying the whole time she’d crank–and she started humming a juicy tune!!! Yippeee!!!! Oh, this juice girl is ecstatic, let me tell ya!
Now, I’m praying it holds up to the finish line of this 30-day juice fast!
Juicer Heaven

I didn’t waste any time at all. That juicer was eating an apple before you could blink!
Whole, organic apple

Washed and ready to go!

Organic Apple Juice Recipe
7 organic apples tossed into the juicer
I poured it into a container and ended up with 2/3 apple juice.
I added 1/3 water (to dilute)
Made 2 quarts…
and an extra glass for me (lunch)!

On a Roll
I didn’t want to stop! I decided to juice up some stuff I had in the fridge. Carrot-spinach juice is my all-time favorite. I decided to mix it up this time and add alfalfa sprouts.
Washed and Ready!

MMmmmmmm

Carrot-Spinach-Sprout Juice
7 big carrots
9 ounce bag spinach leaves
2 ounces sprouts
When I poured it into the freezer container, I had 2/3 juice.
I added 1/3 water to dilute.
Made 3 cups

Totally Forgot!
I discovered in my notes from day 1 when I juiced a bunch, that I had forgot to mention I had leftover veggies (I stored 2 zip lock bags full) because the juicer burnt out and I got tired of blending.
So… here’s what was left over:
- 2 ounces alfalfa sprouts
- 1 celery stalk
- 6 kale leaves
- some chopped cabbage
That went into the juicer

Along with…
2 more ounces alfalfa sprouts
1 big head cabbage
1 cucumber
Big bunch mustard greens
1 bundle celery
2 (beautiful) heirloom, organic beets (with leaves) (from my garden)
Look at all that raw goodness!

Before I started this batch, I decided to run out to the garden and grab some rainbow chard and lettuce leaves…
Organic Rainbow Chard
I’m so excited because this is the first time I’ve juice rainbow chard! Even Raw Juice Girl needs to try new things! I wasn’t sure about it, actually so I asked around on Twitter.
Here was my tweet:
[asks] who juices rainbow chard? Anyone? Do you eat it raw? Juice it raw? Add it to smoothies? RTs and replies are much appreciated.
@rawliving (aka Earth Mother) gave me permission to use her tweet response:
rawliving@RawJuiceGirl I do I do! (raises hand) I juice rainbow chard and use it in GREEN smoothies. Yum!
Thanks, @rawliving–you helped make my juices brighter and healthier!
Note: Be sure to stop by @rawliving’s raw food blog: In the Raw
(Isn’t it beautiful???!!!)

Organic lettuce

Ready for the juicer!
7 big and 9 smaller rainbow chard (leaves and stalk)
4 heaping cups organic lettuce

Green–er, brown–juice

This juice turned out brown. LOL It doesn’t taste bad, though. It’s just that the beets mixed with the other greens and made this mucky color–that’s okay to me! I’m just happy to be truly juicing again. Woo hoo!
Oh, and that tall glass of yummy juice on the left end of the photo was my dinner–delish!
